Allemand Wie Konamis andere Adaption von Batman Returns ist auch die NES-Version ein seitlich scrollendes Beat'em up. Neben der Prügel-Action bietet es auch zwei Abschnitte, in denen der Spieler das Batmobil und das Batskiboat aus dem Film steuert.

In den Beat'em up-Abschnitten muss Batman eine große Anzahl von Gegnern besiegen, um weiterzukommen. Zu den möglichen Angriffen gehören Schläge, Gleitattacken, Dropkicks und ein mächtiger 360°-Cape-Slash-Angriff, der Batmans Gesundheitsleiste aufbraucht. Zu den zu verwendenden Gadgets gehören eine begrenzte Anzahl von Batarangs und ein Enterhaken. Der Haken ist für viele Dinge nützlich: Er kann fliegende Gegner zu Fall bringen, Batman auf höhere Ebenen ziehen, ihn in offene Fenster klettern lassen und mehr. Anglais Like Konami's other adaptation of Batman Returns, the NES version is a side-scrolling beat 'em up. Next to brawling action, it also features two sections where the player controls the Batmobile and the Batskiboat seen in the movie.

In the beat 'em up sections, Batman has to defeat a large number of enemies (members of the Penguin's circus gang) to advance. Possible attacks include punches, sliding attacks, drop kicks and a powerful 360° cape slash attack which will drain Batman's health bar. Gadgets to be used include a limited number of batarangs and a grappling hook. The hook is useful for many things: it can take down flying enemies, pull Batman up to higher levels, lets him climb into open windows and more. Hidden in background items somewhere in the levels are power-ups, including hearts that refill the health bar and extra batarangs.

Each of the six levels in the game concludes with a boss fight against one or more especially powerful enemies.

The Batmobile is armed with machine guns and bat discs, used to dispatch the enemy bikes and cars in the driving level. The Batskiboat section is similar, except that there are no enemies and the only goal is to collect coins for extra points.
Espagnol Batman Returns tuvo poca gloria debido a la vara tan alta que pusieron sus predecesores. Gráficamente es muy oscuro logrando ese toque que quizo emular de la película. El sonido no deslumbra pero tiene esas melodías pegajosas de la mayoría de los juegos de 8 bits. Sinceramente este titulo se vio opacado por la gloria de sus predecesores y por tener la mala suerte que para SNES consola de 16 bits de Nintendo tuvo su Batman Return en el mismo año que el homónimo de NES, un juego mucho mas completo y desarrollado casi con excelencia.
